How to use 4Networking to market your book.

If you’ve written and published a book, or are intending to do so, this article is for you. It is based on my experience promoting my book through 4Networking, rather than being a general guide to marketing your book.
If you want a really excellent guide to marketing any book, I strongly recommend “The Ultimate Guide to Writing and Marketing a Bestselling Book – On a Shoestring Budget” by the wonderful Dee Blick.
As you probably know by now I’m the author of Business Networking for Dummies. My second book, Instant Networking, will be published in May 2016.
I’ve also been a member of 4Networking since 2007 and have certainly used my membership of 4N to significantly increase my book sales in the couple of years since my first book was published. (Full disclosure, I was previously a Director of 4Networking Ltd plus I held various team roles in the network from when I joined until May 2015).
If you want to sell books through 4N, here are a number of things you should do:

  1. Be out there. If you want to sell books nationally, get on the road and meet people. Use your 4Networking passport and get yourself out there. The opportunity to get out there and build your network is huge. Don’t expect people to come to you, they’re busy with their own stuff, go and find them. 4Networking gives you the opportunity to have your own book tour within the network, just by booking into meetings.
  2. Demonstrate your expertise – 4Sight. The 4Sighting opportunity for authors is an absolute must. Craft a 4Sight which shows how much you know about your chosen subject and present it to as many people in as many groups as possible. On the 4Networking site you are now able to see which groups don’t have 4Sights booked in, so you can go and ask the team if you can fill it. Or, with enough notice, plan your tour and contact the relevant Area Leaders well in advance and get booked in. I’ve done over 200 4Sights – 4Sights sell books.
  3. Promote your 4Sights online. Use the various tools which 4N make available to you – the 4Networking online forum, the 4Networking LinkedIn group, #4NHour on Twitter. Connect with local members BEFORE you ever go and 4Sight there and really engage with them. You will get much more traction and much more success if you do this, rather than just turning up.
  4. Make it easy for people to buy from you Part I. Take books with you. I know this sounds obvious but get yourself a stock of books and make sure they are at the meeting with you. Don’t rely on people going back and buying it on Amazon. Real life will get in the way and they will forget.
  5. Make it easy for people to buy from you Part II. Have a banner and/or something for the BUMF table made up which clearly states that your book is for sale at that meeting, along with the price.
  6. Make it easy for people to buy from you Part III. Invest in a credit card reader. People might not have the cash but still want to buy the book. If you send them off with an Amazon link, most of them will never get round to buying it. I use PayPal and have a credit card reader with me constantly. Carrying a card reader has resulted in a 50% increase in the number of books I sell when I’m on the road.
  7. Keep in touch with the people you meet. Not everyone will buy your book there and then. Make sure you follow up and keep in touch, by maintaining a mailing list and regularly putting out content which is relevant to the subject of your book. At the very least you should be writing articles (like I am doing here!) and ideally you should be also putting the content out through as many social media channels as possible, in as many formats (written, image, audio, video) as possible.
  8. Engage through 4N’s online presence. Whether that’s the 4N forum, LinkedIn, #4NHour or anywhere else you find (I might not be up to date on all of them) it is really important to continue to build your network in as many ways possible.
  9. Ask for reviews, promote your reviews. If you know someone has read your book, ask them to leave you a review on Amazon. More positive reviews = more book sales. As you get the reviews, promote them through your social media channels as well.

There are so many books available on every single subject. Writing an awesome book is the first part of the process. Marketing like mad, through as many channels as you can, is the next part. The best book in the world won’t sell if nobody knows about it and, even if you have a publisher behind you, most of the marketing effort is down to you, the author. The brilliant thing is that your effort will be rewarded, and just getting yourself out there is much more than most authors will do.
Remember that attention is something which everyone is short of these days. There is so much “stuff” constantly vying for our attention that each one of us needs to do that little bit more, and connect a little bit better. It’s a constant, relentless process. And I love it!
